Teacher Surprises Students With Sweet 'Drive-By' Visits After Schools Shut Down.
  • With schools closed amidst the novel coronavirus pandemic, teachers and students are mourning the loss of their time together.

Brandy Hurtado, who works at Gray Elementary School in Balch Springs, Texas, misses her students every day, and the feeling is mutual. While they still connect via FaceTime, they’ve all longed to see each other in person. That’s why Brandy decided to get creative!

During one of their video calls, a little boy asked Brandy if she could visit him at home. At first, she wasn’t sure that was possible. After all, we are supposed to be social distancing. But she quickly realized she could do both from her car!

After getting their parents’ permission, Brandy headed around the city to surprise her students with sweet drive-by visits one day.

Parking outside each home, Brandy held up a sign that read, “I miss you!”

While small, the gesture meant everything to her students! “I was happy because I miss her and I like to go to school a lot,” said 6-year-old Salmon Mitchell. “I like the help she gives me and I like when she helps me do good.”

As for Brandy, she’s just glad to be spreading joy during this tough time. Plus, she loves seeing her students’ smiling faces!

“This [pandemic] is stressful for everybody,” she added . “Teachers had to turn the teaching world upside down within a matter of hours. … I gave [my students] a little bit of normalcy and sometimes that’s really important for kids.”

What a wonderful educator! Here’s hoping her class gets the chance to catch up in person soon. In the meantime, these kids know they’re loved!
