Pentatonix are a vocal powerhouse. They’re a group of five highly talented singers, and their group is one of the most popular a cappella groups to emerge over the last decade. They have covered all manner of songs with nothing but their voices, from pop songs to centuries old Christmas songs. One of the members is even a a beatboxer who provides the entire rhythm section, meaning they need to backing track whatsoever.
What’s the one way that you can improve a song by such an A Team of vocal talent?
Include the voice of one of the greatest singers of all time… Whitney Houston.
This video for Pentatonix singing “Do You Hear What I Hear?” posthumously featuring Whitney Houston is amazing for a few reasons.YouTube screenshot Source: YouTube screenshot
1) The video itself features two AMAZING dancers in a Christmas themed studio.
They dance in a mix of ballet and contemporary styles, and they are spectacular. They move with such grace and skill.
2) The Pentatonix are as incredible as ever.
The group has been going since they formed in 2011 and subsequently won the third season of The Sing-Off. Across their singers they cover the full vocal range from the lowest notes to the highest. They have covered many Christmas songs in the past but this is undoubtably special for them.ptxofficial instagram Source: ptxofficial instagram
3) Whitney Houston is a timeless treasure.
She is such an icon of music. Whitney is known as one of the best and most popular singers of the past thirty years before her untimely passing in 2012. This video was made in collaboration with The Estate of Whitney E. Houston, and Pentatonix worked with them to include Whitney’s posthumous voice in the song. And the result is spectacular.
The video begins with a couple of children sitting in a bare studio. They stand and run behind some oversized presents (either the presents are oversized or the children are miniature…It’s unclear which is the case) and emerge as fully grown adults.
Not just any adults, but two amazing dancers.
Their dancing style at times seems classical. They move with such grace that it seems like a ballet set with a contemporary setting and costumes, however sometimes they seem to break out with a more modern contemporary style.
Even for those who don’t know anything about dance (ok you got me!) watching these two is mesmerizing.
Sometimes they even get a bit acrobatic
With lifts and other impressive moves, this pair is incredible to watch. With their intimate style of dancing and the incredible combination of Pentatonix and Whitney Houston, the video is pretty moving. There is even a sense of narrative between the dancers.
At one point toward the end the pair break out and enter a dark area “outside” the studio. Here they dance backlit as silhouettes and form several striking poses and acrobatic moves. They really are amazing to watch.
At the end, the pair run out of the dark space and back into the brightly lit studio with the giant decorations and presents. They run back behind the presents and once again emerge as kids. The whole routine is truly adorable and such a treat to watch.
