A police officer spots a homeless man

Officer Brian Zagorski works in Niles, Illinois. He was making his normal rounds when he saw a homeless man walking. He could tell this guy was having trouble. So, he got out of his car to check on him.

    He explained why he stopped

When Zagorski was asked what stood out about this man, he said, “He was having trouble walking. The rubber under his feet was folding under as he took a step.” That prompted this officer to see if there was anything he could do to help.

    Offering supplies

Oftentimes, homeless people don’t have access to the supplies they need. That’s why officers in Niles often give out bags of H.O.P.E., which contain things like shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, and more. But when Zagorski offered one of these bags to the man, he said no.

    Still wanting to help

At first, Zagorski didn’t know what to do. But at the same time, he felt like he needed to do something to help this man. Then, he remembered the man’s shoes.

    Zagorski made an incredible offer

First, this officer asked the man what size shoes he wore. After the man responded, Zagorski realized they wore the same size. That’s when he offered the man his shoes.

    Initial shock

Zagorski said the man’s eyes lit up right away. But at first, he refused to accept them. He probably couldn’t believe a police officer would do something like this. But after a while, he finally took the cop up on his offer. So, the two men traded shoes.

    Willing to do more

After the homeless man took the shoes, Zagorski offered him more assistance. But the man didn’t want any more help. He politely declined and was on his way.

Zagorski was happy he could help

Some cops want to make their communities better and safer places. Zagorski said, “I was happy. I made a difference and that’s essentially what we sign up to do, is to make a difference.”

Looking out for others in the future

This story might be heartwarming but for this homeless man, Zagorski was the only person who stepped up to help. But this officer promises he’ll be on the lookout for others who could use a little help in the future. In the meantime, more cops should try to be as generous and giving as Officer Zagorski.
