35 Reasons Your Big Sister Is So Important In Your Life
  • Although sisters can sometimes drive you crazy for getting all up in your business or calling you out for being a bad girl, you should consider yourself pretty darn lucky that you even have one. That’s because sisters keep you on your toes and make life more interesting!

A sister is your cheerleader when you’re feeling blue, your best friend when you want to talk smack, and your mama bear when you need protecting. Studies have even shown that having a sister can make you happier and more well-adjusted than people who grew up with only brothers.

Having a sister is truly a gift, and here are 35 reasons why sisters totally rule!

    1) She’s proud of you no matter what you do…or did.

Even when you feel like rolling your eyes at your sister for all the crazy, embarrassing moments she puts you though (like wearing a T-shirt of your face that says “world’s proudest sister” on it), she’s still the best person in the world for admitting that you’re related!

And guess what else? She’s also the reason why you’re so ambitious ! Sisters who develop a close-knit bond also encourage each other to reach their full potential.

    2) She lowers your chance of getting a divorce.

There are many reasons why people get divorced, and these days people go into marriages knowing there’s a 50 percent chance that it may come to crashing end.

However, a study from Ohio State University shows that having siblings means that you have better odds of staying married! It turns out that having a sister makes you less self-centered and more mature as an adult, which of course are qualities that can help you weather the ups and downs of any relationship.

    3) She makes you feel less crazy.

Try to identify who you are and where you fit into the world can sometimes be taxing on your mental well-being. But, it turns out that sisters are a great outlet for getting all that uncertainty out of your system! 4) She gives you unconditional love even when you’ve been naughty.

We’ve all heard that pets give you unconditional love, but your sister can also light up your inner warm fuzzies, too. She’s won’t judge if you get caught playing Grand Theft Auto in real life, and won’t disown you for jetting off to the Bahamas without her on HER birthday.

    5) Your sister paved the way so the road wouldn’t be so bumpy for you.

It’s true! According to a study published by Duke University, younger siblings really do get away with murder.

Because mom and dad have already had plenty of practice punishing your sister, they know what works and what doesn’t. That means the parental units are more lenient when you stay out past curfew, stumble through the front door drunk as a hobo, or dye your hair (and the bathroom walls) goth purple.

    6) You can be yourself around your her.

The only person we can truly be ourselves with is, well, ourselves! But, the next best thing is a sister, who doesn’t care that you still suck on your thumb like a 2-year-old when you’re depressed, or that you wear huge granny panties on first dates as a deterrent against one-night stands.

    7) She’ll tell you right away if your thighs look fat in those skinny jeans.

Your sister, for better or worse, will give you honest fashion advice. She’ll critique that sparkly sequin mini dress that barely grazes your butt cheeks, or that silly cosplay costume of a medieval bar maid – because, that’s what sisters are for!

    8) She’s the responsible one who looks out for you!

Your older sister babysat for you when you were a kid, which means that she’s practically like a second mom! She’ll lovingly remind you to buy a gift for dad’s birthday, come over with chicken noodle soup when you’re sick with the flu, and make an appointment with your doctor for your annual “lady bits” checkup because she wants to make sure you live to be old and wrinkly!

    9) She drove you everywhere when you were in high school.

Because your older sister had a driver’s license and some awesome wheels, she made you look cool when you’re still a freshman in high school! While all your friends were stuck with having their moms take them to the mall or movies, you got to ride shotgun with your own personal Uber driver.

    10) She lets you crash at her place and do whatever until 3am.

You can pretend you’re at Sephora and try on all her expensive makeup without spending a dime, cook yourself a meal with her Home Chef foodie subscription box, and binge watch all the shows on HBO, Showtime, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ that you’re too cheap to pay for. It’s like having a best friend and snow day all wrapped into one!

    11) You can project your anger onto her and she won’t even get mad!

Your sister watched you go through temper tantrums when you were two, so that adult hissy fit you’re throwing right now because of a bad hair day won’t even make her bat her $200 eyelash extensions.

She understands that whatever hate you’re spewing is just your way of managing stress, and she won’t take it personally….as long as you don’t think the hole she cut in the crotch of your yoga pants is “personal.”

    14) She gave you the lo-down on the adult stuff.

In a day and age where a quick search of any dirty word on the Internet can turn up every adult website imaginable, your dear sister was your personal Google search engine. She filled you in on all the details your budding adolescent brain just couldn’t understand, like why “it” sometimes curves like a banana or bends to the right.

In fact, if it wasn’t for your older sister, you’d still probably think that Anna’s “foot size doesn’t matter” quip in Frozen was about feet!

    15) You get to spend some quality time bonding over cheap wine and girl talk.

Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you’re any less tighter with your big sis! Instead of having pillow fights and talking about boys, you now get to talk about more grown-up stuff, like which show to binge watch next, or which cute Starbucks barista you should “Netflix and chill” with.

    16) She’s someone you can play house with… “to infinity and beyond!”

Whether you had a dollhouse when you were kids, a fort made out of sheets and cardboard boxes, or you just pretended the invisible tea set was real, your sister is someone you can play house with into our adult years too! 17) She’s always cheering for you.

Not counting the time she secretly plotted to exchange you for a puppy at Petsmart when you were little, your sister has been rooting for you since the day you were born. She bought all the Girl Scout cookies that didn’t sell, did your hair and makeup for senior prom, and even gave you some pepper spray in case of emergencies.

    18) She’s the only person you can talk to about private family matters.

When someone else makes a “yo mama” joke, it’s so not cool. But, sometimes you just need someone to make fun of mama with when you catch her sneaking candy bars in her purse without paying for it. Your sister totally gets it because she’s part of the same messed up family, too!

    19) She’s your self-development guru.

Your sister gives you tons of advice because she’s already been there and done that. 20) She’s also your girl boss role model.

Your older sister taught you how to kick Billy in his chestnuts after he started pulling your hair on the playground, she let you re-use her old book reports for English class, and you actually loved getting her old hand-me-downs because her clothes are always on trend. Your sister preserved the sanctity of the family name by being the smart girl who got straight-A’s and was always well-behaved. 23) She won’t rat you out to your parents, teachers, or priest.

Your sister may have ratted you out in grade school when you ate your boogers or pushed little Stacy off the swing set. But, now that you’re older and she’s learned to like you, she’ll keep her mouth shut when a boy sneaks in through your bedroom window or you come home high as a kite and eat all the cookies, chips, and chicken dumplings in the pantry.

    24) You both talk the same f’d up secret language.

Identical twins have been known to communicate in a made-up language that not even hardcore military code brokers can crack. But, even sisters who are born years apart can have a secret language, too.

Without saying a single word, an exchange of knowing glances between you and your sis can say anything from “touch it and die, betch” to “please pretend to be my girlfriend so I can get away from this horny creep at the bar.”

    25) She transcends the space-time continuum.

You’re friends forever, no matter how much time has passed. If it’s been weeks or months since you last talked to your sis (maybe because one of you is on a silent meditation retreat in India), it doesn’t matter. 27) She’s the only one you trust with your kids.

Your sister knows all your silly quirks and wacky ways of doing things. She knows that you like to draw funny faces on the bananas you toss in your kid’s lunchboxes, and that you change the wifi password every day as leverage for getting the chores done. Your sister is your children’s favorite aunt, godparent, and protector for a reason!

    28) She’s your mama bear.

Your sister is your mama bear who protects you like her own cub. She’ll punch Bobby in the face when he tries to get too frisky, and teach you some slick self-defense moves for when she’s not around. When you’re unhappy or in tears, she’ll make you laugh and help you put all that drama into perspective.

    29) She’s a good influence on your bad health habits.

Your sister is a good influence on your health, and she encourages you to work out, eat healthy, and get out into nature as much as possible. She reminds you that goals aren’t just for New Year’s resolutions – you can start on a Wednesday afternoon in the middle of July!

    30) She’s your rock.

It’s hard to imagine a world without your sister – in fact, it makes you cry crocodile tears anytime you think of life without her! She’s the rock makes you feel grounded, secure, and safe. You wouldn’t trade your rock for anything, not even The Rock (okay, maybe for one night) because she’s the source of your strength!

    31) She’s curated a list of…well, everything!

Your sister can tell you which wines to pair with that coffee crème brûlée dessert or the macadamia nut-crusted fish dinner, recommend the perfect museum to visit during your travels (sex museum in London, anyone?), and she’ll know exactly which movies, books, and music you’ll absolutely adore. In fact, she’s like a Google Librarian for the top 10 best of everything!

    32) She’s more loyal than your doggo.

We all know that dogs are loyal to a fault, which is the main reason why they’re known as “man’s best friend.” But, having a sister is even better – she’ll hold a grudge when someone wrongs you AND key their brand new Mercedes!
    Instagram/Chloe Meacham Source: Instagram/Chloe Meacham

    33) She’s the ultimate teacher.

Your sister is always teaching you things, including the stuff you didn’t want or need to know, like how “spotted dick” is actually the name of an English pudding recipe and not a clever euphemism for an STD.

She also teaches you about life lessons through her own experiences, like the painful divorce and custody battle she endured, or the DUI she got after a bender in college.

    34) She’ll call you out when you’re being both Beavis and Butt-head.

Sisters are there to call you out whenever you get out of line or plan to do something really stupid. In your heart you know that she’s right, and that taking an ice pick to your boyfriend’s car tires for cheating is only asking for more trouble than you can handle.

    35) She makes it feel like you’re never really alone.

The bottom line is that having a sister means that you’re never alone, even if you’re on the other side of the universe! Whatever struggles you’re going through, she’s already been there and knows how to get you out of the black hole you’ve been sucked into.

Studies have shown that growing up with a sibling can help reduce negative feelings, curb depression, and improve your mental outlook. Sisters also make you a kinder , gentler person.

    32) She’s more loyal than your doggo.

We all know that dogs are loyal to a fault, which is the main reason why they’re known as “man’s best friend.” But, having a sister is even better – she’ll hold a grudge when someone wrongs you AND key their brand new Mercedes!
